Questions Raised About Giuliani Security

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is denying a report that he billed tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses to little-known city departments for trips to the Hamptons. WNYC's Andrea Bernstein has more.

The report on politico.com was based on documents and American Express statements obtained under the Freedom of Information Act Among the departments charged were the Loft Board, the Procurement Policy Board, and the Mayor's Office for Disabilities.

The report says the trips took place during the time the mayor began seeing Judith Nathan, who became his 3rd wife, but acknowledges that there is no way to definitively link the security costs to Nathan. In last night's CNN/YouTube debate, Giuliani said the report was "not true," and that he required 24-hour protection from the police.

GIULIANI: And they took care of me and they took records and they handled them in the way they handled them. I had nothing to do with the handling of their records and they were handled so far as I know perfectly appropriately

The Giuliani campaign says it will launch its own investigation into the way the expenses were handled.
