NYC Holds Special Elections Tomorrow

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Tomorrow voters will head to the polls for three special elections around the city. One of them is the race to succeed Hiram Monserrate, whose council seat in Queens is open now that he's in the state senate. Julissa Ferreras was Monserrate's chief of staff, she says safety on Roosevelt Avenue would be increased by improving lighting under the 7 train, which is elevated.

FERRERAS: So it kind of sets a shadow on the community, and crime loves shadow. They love, you know, crime loves to be in the dark corners of the community. And I just want to know that we'll be able to illuminate and change the lighting and perhaps bring more light to the Roosevelt Avenue corridor.

REPORTER: Ferreras is up against Francisco Moya, Eduardo Giraldo and George Dixon. The district includes Corona, East Elmhurst, and parts of Jackson Heights and Elmhurst.
