Imam To Be Released on Bail
New York, NY —
The Queens imam accused of lying to counter-terrorism investigators will be released later today or tomorrow on one and a half million dollars bail.
REPORTER: Ahmad Afzali appeared in federal court in Brooklyn with his lawyer Ron Kuby.
KUBY: He's extremely happy he's getting out of jail. And he was always willing to accept this agreement. He poses no risk of flight. He has no place to go, no desire to go anywhere.
REPORTER: Under the agreement, Afzali will be placed under electronic monitoring. He'll be allowed to go back to his job as director of a Muslim funeral home.
He'll also be able to visit a mosque a few times a month.
Prosecutors say Afzali lied to them about his conversations with terror bomb suspect Najibullah Zazi. The imam allegedly tipped off Zazi to police interest in him.
