WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Thirteen people have been indicted for an alleged wide-ranging criminal enterprise. Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes says the four main defendants netted up to $10,000 a day between 2006 and 2008, by counterfeiting credit cards, staging car accidents, and purchasing properties through mortgage fraud.

HYNES: What has happened in this country and this county, is a disgrace, it is an outrage, a scandal that is going out of control.

REPORTER: Hynes says the ring stole nearly a half-million dollars from eight insurance companies, and victimized an estimated tens-of-thousands of people.

All 13 people were indicted on a range of charges, including enterprise corruption which carries a penalty of 25 years in prison.
