Flu Shots Recommended for People with HIV

New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS should get both seasonal and H1N1 flu shots this year.
REPORTER: That's according to Dr. Duane Smith, the director of clinical services for the Center for Special Studies at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center.
SMITH: It's a very important part of preventing influenza and the chance of worse sickness and death.
REPORTER: At a forum organized by the Gay Men's Health Crisis, Dr. Smith claimed that nasal spray vaccine is not effective and that injections are the preferred delivery method for both seasonal and H1N1 flu for HIV positive patients (they are effective for the general population, he says). And he says there are no complications for HIV positive patients taking anti-retroviral medication.
