Nancy Evans discusses her book How to Get Happily Published.

Evans, a former editor of Harper's Weekly, explains that she and her co-author, Judith Appelbaum, read every other book on getting published before writing their own, and found that many of the how-to books lacked common sense. She and host Walter James Miller discuss the many opportunities for getting published at small and regional presses. Evans recommends that budding authors choose the appropriate publisher for each project, saying that each book has its own special audience that may not be a national audience. She advises authors to learn the details of the publishing process in order to exert their influence. Authors know their books better than anyone, Evans says, so they should be involved in planning the book's publicity, from writing jacket copy to choosing magazines for placing ads. Evans also encourages authors to give talks, offer themselves as experts, and take time to meet with readers after a book is published.
