Paterson Says Budget Proposal Not Enough

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Gov. David Paterson says New York's lawmakers' new budget plan isn't enough to close the state's $3.2 billion deficit.

"My understanding, the leaders have told me this is as far as they're going to go. But it's not far enough," Paterson says.

Paterson says he doesn't want to reject the proposal because it contains $600 million in new spending cuts. But because of his ongoing frustration over the legislature's resistance to making cuts to education and health care spending, he says he will not send the package to lawmakers as a single bill, which would have allowed them to vote on it today.

Legislative leaders are reviewing their options.
