"Umbrella" by Rihanna
Do summer songs need to be sunny? Rihanna's song "Umbrella," suggests that wetter is better. The song, which recently topped Billboard's Hot 100 chart, is "the first serious contender for Song of the Summer," according to New York Times pop music critic Kelefa Sanneh.

"Buy u a drink" by T Pain
Florida rapper T Pain serves some relief from the summer heat in "Buy u a drink." The song recently hit number one on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

"Do You" by Ne-Yo
"Do You" by the singer Ne-Yo, has "already been stamped as the hottest love song of the summer," according to the Washington Post. Ne-Yo, you may know, is the songwriter responsible for such monster hits as Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable" and Rihanna's "Unfaithful."

"Lip Gloss" by Lil Mama
Pucker up! Some rappers promote cars, others endorse sneakers. Lil Mama, a teenage rapper from Brooklyn, lets you know that "My lip gloss is poppin', my lip gloss is cool" in this catchy song.

"I'm a Flirt" by R. Kelly
"I'm a Flirt," by the embattled R&B star R. Kelly, is being touted by Billboard as a candidate for the "song of the summer." The song is drawn from the album "Double Up," which last week topped the Billboard 200 chart.
