Radiohead's "Hail to the Thief"

Spinning on Air | May 18, 2010
Songs can come in unusual shapes, sizes and sounds. Examples on this show include the keening of Radiohead (featured in selections from their forthcoming release "Hail to the Thief"); the compelling, off kilter vocalizing of Mayo Thompson from his obscure but classic album "Corky's Debt to His Father;" and the band Sigur Ros, who this time are heard with the traditional Icelandic chanting of Steindor Andersen. All this, plus "C'mon a My House" sung in Japanese, saxophonist Sweet Sue Terry's "Pink Slimy Worm," Hans Reichel's daxophone, and clarinetist Andy Biskin's Rube Goldberg-inspired compositions.

Radiohead's sixth album, titled Hail to the Thief (Capitol Records), is due out on June 10. One of the summer's most anticipated recordings, the 14-track affair was recorded in Oxfordshire, UK and Los Angeles, and was produced by Radiohead and longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich.

Hail to the Thief will be preceded by the single "There There," to be released on May 26. A handful of the album's tracks have circulated around the Internet as live MP3s from the band's European tour last summer, during which they debuted the material. On this edition of Spinning on Air, we sample four tracks from the studio release: "The Gloaming," "We Suck Young Blood (!)," "Sit Down, Stand Up," and "Backdrifts."
