London-based Polish pianist Hania Rani has forged her own path in neo-classical music, first with her solo piano works and then with her expanded sonic palette of vocals and electronics. Nowadays, while she’s working at her studio, she often wonders: “Am I even a musician? Or am I practicing thinking?”
Either way, Rani is no stranger to transforming her thoughts into musical notes. In particular, her first piano concerto, titled Non Fiction, accumulates her reflections on the human cost of war, taking inspiration from another Polish composer and child prodigy, Josima Feldschuh. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, with a 45-piece orchestra and experimental instrumentalists Rakhi Singh (Manchester Collective), Jack Wylie (Portico Quartet), and percussionist/composer Valentina Magaletti, Non Fiction embodies the horrors of not only past but also present wars. Her solo performances, recorded at our Manhattan studios for Soundcheck, give listeners a unique opportunity to hear Rani’s compositions in their barest form. - Sırma Munyar
