#5040, And the Bells Were Ringing Out

New Sounds | Aug 21, 2025

Hear music that uses bells or is about bells in work by violist and composer Jessica Meyer; a collaboration from vocalist Caroline Shaw and So Percussion; a song by Brian Eno; and more.

Listen to New York–based violist and composer Jessica Meyer’s work for vocal ensemble and field recordings, which tests out the natural reverb of a decommissioned water tank in Colorado. Meyer's, “Ring Out, Wild Bells” features the voices of Roomful of Teeth - perhaps titled after the Tennyson poem - and comes from her 2019 record, Ring Out. Then, listen to harpist Mary Lattimore in collaboration with accordionist/composer Walt McClements, which Lattimore describes as “a smattering of joyful harp, accordion, piano, synth, and bell experiments embroidered with memories of long drives and bears in a tree and late nights". There’s music from the late Canadian violinist Oliver Schroer, who followed the ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. He wrote pieces about it and took field recordings of church and cathedral bells along the way.

Hear music by English experimental rock outfit These New Puritans, the twin brothers Jack and George Barnett, from their forthcoming album, due in May, and a song called “Bells”. Also, listen to Jonathan Harvey’s electronic work built on the sound of a single large church bell and a boy soprano. Plus, sample music by vocalist/composer Caroline Shaw and the musicians of So Percussion from their collaborative album Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part, and work by Brian Eno. - Caryn Havlik
