#4917, New Releases, August 2024

New Sounds | Aug 30, 2024

There's new music by composer Ellen Reid inspired by urban parks; by Polish guitarist Raphael Rogiński; from flexible French/Belgian ensemble 0; and by Canadian band Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and sound artist Ellen Reid, hear immersive music - “Ambient Maximalism in Synths, Strings, Harps, and Horns” - inspired by her project, SOUNDWALK, a GPS-enabled work of public art that reimagines urban parks as interactive soundscapes. Listen to two pieces; the first features Kronos Quartet soaring above desert vistas and the second involves Shabaka Hutching’s tenor saxophone meditations.

There’s also new music by the Polish guitarist Raphael Rogiński from his new album named after the grass snake Žaltys, a revered household spirit in Lithuanian folklore. Listen to the track with guest Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė who sings and plays the kanklės—a Lithuanian plucked string instrument or chordophone closely related to the zither. Hear a playful improvisation-hatched song from the Norwegian collaboration of vocalist Mari Kvien Brunvoll, guitarist Stein Urheim, and the trio Moskus; and a new symphonic instrumental protest track from the Montreal-based post-rockband, Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Also, there’s new work from ensemble 0 who play “acoustic music for the present time“. With members based in different cities and countries, including France, Catalonia and Belgium, the group, directed by Stéphane Garin and Sylvain Chauveau, performs pieces by (mostly) contemporary composers including its own members, and works with numerous collaborators. Plus, listen to a concerto for Mandolin and Orchestra by British composer Anna Clyne, featuring Avi Avital and The Knights. That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
