Listen to music from English composer Jane Antonia Cornish’s 2022 record, Sierra - for multiple layers of pianos, as played by Vicky Chow, the world-class soloist, collaborator, educator, mentor, and a member of Bang on a Can All-Stars. Then hear four justly-tuned pianos in “Sirens” from composer Chris P. Thompson, who is the longtime percussionist in Alarm Will Sound. The piece is composed and meticulously programmed entirely in modern piano roll notation, in an extension of the tradition of the piano rolls of Conlon Nancarrow, (Musical America).
Then, listen to music for three computer-driven pianos (Disklaviers), where each piano has been tuned very close to the other two. It’s from a series of works, Hyperchromatica, microtonal music by composer and music writer Kyle Gann for an imagined single piano with 243 keys. That, and more.
