#4826, Songs in French Creoles

Hear songs in Réunion Creole from singer, percussionist, ukuleleist Oriane Lacaille; Haitian Creole from Paris-based Haitian-Canadian finger-style blues guitarist Mélissa Laveaux and Haitian-American cellist, banjo player, and songwriter Leyla McCalla; and Martinican Creole from Marseille-based composer and guitarist David Walters. 

There’s music from Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, sung in Réunion Creole by Oriane Lacaille, a percussionist, ukuleleist, author, composer, performer, and daughter of René Lacaille (singer, accordion player, guitarist and extraordinary songster himself.) Then, hear Martinican Creole, as sung by Marseille-based composer/guitarist/vocalist David Walters, woven together with cello of French cellist/bassist Vincent Segal, kora by Malian kora master Ballaké Sissoko, and percussionist, Roger Raspail, originally from Guadeloupe.

There’s also music by Haitian-Canadian finger-style blues guitarist Mélissa Laveaux restyling the folk song Nan Fon Bwa, ('in the deep woods' in Kreyol). Listen to the Creole lament “Salangadou” from Haitian-American Cellist, banjo player, and songwriter, Leyla McCalla. Plus, hear Louisiana Creole by fiddler, singer, and co-founder of the Cajun-singing punk band Lost Bayou Ramblers, Louis Michot from his solo record, Rêve du Troubadour.
