Hear the finest new music including work by versatile drummer Pheeroan akLaff, a new work by Syrian-American clarinetist for Dutch ensemble Fuse, and the Irish experimental doom folk quartet, ØXN.
A versatile drummer usually thought of as avant-garde, Pheeroan akLaff, has worked with some of the more adventurous musicians in jazz, in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast, traditional gamelan in Bali, presented concerts in Japanese temples, and has toured as part U.S. State Department touring of nine African nations, the Near East, and India. Listen to his latest single, “Guineé”, on which he features balafon, kora, and djembe, as well as a spoken word interlude.
Also, hear a new work, “On Anxiety”, from Syrian-American clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, for the ambitious Dutch ensemble Fuse, from their project, Mikrokosmos, a collaboration between two visual artists and twelve composers to create an awesome collection of new music. Then, listen to one of the grisly traditional folk tunes by Irish quartet, ØXN, (pronounced 'oc-en' and named after castrated draft animals – “sometimes worshipped, sometimes doomed for domestication,” they say) which features Dublin-band Lankum’s Radie Peat, (The Guardian.) It’s from their experimental doom folk album, CYRM, a magisterial and otherworldly romp into goth and darkness.
Listen to music by Boston-based composer, producer, and engineer Doug Bielmeier for the NYC-based chamber ensemble, Hypercube, a quartet of saxophone, guitar, piano, and percussion. The work is called “Burning Old Man Summer” from Bielmeier’s 2023 release, Music for Billionaires, which explores the relationship between creativity and privilege in the contemporary music industry. Plus, there’s electroacoustic music by the collaborative trio of Vardan Ovsepian, Sunny Kim, and Ben Monder from their release, Liminal Silence, featuring Sunny’s voice with Vardan’s and Ben’s expansive sounds.
