Hear music for violin, viola, and/or cello with other sounds by transdisciplinary composer Yaz Lancaster; Cellist and composer MIZU; and Bryan Senti, among others.
Violinist, vocalist, and composer Yaz Lancaster works with sound, written text and visual art and on their debut album of commissions and collaborations, AmethYst, which also brings in electronics and processing. Hear violin and synth on Gramm Drennen’s “of neither water nor land” along with Hawaiian composer Leilehua Lanzilotti’s “Ko’u inoa” for violin and vocals. Many of the works on the record have accompanying video.
Then listen to music by cellist, composer, and electronic music artist MIZU (fka Issei Herr) which uses overdubbed cello improvisations to build a larger picture of transformation, and may move in ways that earn both labels of minimalism and ambient music. There’s also music by hip hop producer and composer Johan Lenox featuring the group ETHEL from his 2023 release, Johan's Childhood Chamber Nostalgia Album.
Hear minimalist-leaning work by NY-based violist/composer/improviser Jessica Pavone with Toomai String Quartet, from her record, Songs of Synastry and Solitude. Then, listen to violin-centric music by L.A.-based Cuban-American multi-instrumentalist Bryan Senti, which perches between western classical music, systems music, and folkloric music of Colombia and Cuba. Plus, listen to music for violin and tape loops in the late American violinist and composer Michael Galasso’s “Scenes.” - Caryn Havlik
