French pianist Vanessa Wagner is an open-minded and accomplished classical pianist who has been able to explore contemporary music usually rarely played by classical musicians. Her recordings have included work by American composers Moondog and minimalist composer/pianist Philip Glass; and soon work by vocalist and pioneer Meredith Monk to American electronic musician Laurel Halo. While she does perform and record romantic, baroque, and classical music (Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Rameau), Wagner reaches into ambient, electronic, and minimalist music as well.
During her chat with host John Schaefer, Vanessa Wagner explains how she feels that Minimalism is a bridge between “popular” and “serious” music, and is drawn to exploring these works. This is in contrast to the prevalence of European elitism, which was in full effect when she was at conservatory (music by Erik Satie was accepted, but work by Arvo Pärt was looked down upon.) Wagner grew up on rock music; enjoys electronic music (she has worked with the producer Murcof); and also listens to ambient music like Loscil and glitchy sound art by Alva Noto, who collaborated with the late Ryuichi Sakamoto.
