#4689, Uncanny Weather

New Sounds | Nov 3, 2024

Listen to weather-related works by English violinist and sound designer Ruby Colley, Bang on a Can composer Michael Gordon, cellist Rebecca Foon working as Saltland, and a lot more.

English violinist, composer, and sound artist Ruby Colley “seeks to reflect the world we live in now, not an idealised form of nature, which can often dominate our attempts to confront the climate catastrophe,” (liner notes, Bandcamp.) Hear music from her 2022 record, Overheard, where Colley combines field recordings, violin, double bass, oud and electronics.

Then, listen to American composer Christopher Cerrone and his piano concerto, The Air Suspended, for pianist Shai Wosner, inspired by texts by Ben Lerner, Elena Ferrante, and TS Eliot about 'uncanny weather'. The work "reflects his ongoing concern with documenting the experience of living through climate change", while also considering those "ambient and terrifying emotional effects", (program notes.)

Then, hear work by Pulitzer Prize and Grammy-winning composer and environmental activist John Luther Adams, who lived and worked for years in Alaska, and saw firsthand the early warning signs of climate change. Listen to music from his record, Earth and the Great Weather. Plus, a long-form work by Bang on a Can co-founder and composer Michael Gordon, involving drums, strings, and samples of sirens, thunder and other sounds. And more.
