#4685, Ingram Marshall Memorial Concert, Part 2
The late American composer Ingram Marshall pioneered the use of tape delay, and later, digital delay, as part of the architecture of a composition. His works often incorporated post-Minimalism, ambient electronic effects, and echoes of Indonesian gamelan music. From a Memorial Concert of Ingram Marshall's work recorded live in The Greene Space in October 2022, hear violinist Todd Reynolds in “September Canons”, a work for violin with electronic processing, and a "lamentation on the events of September 11, 2001."
Pianist and composer, and student of Ingram Marshall, Timo Andres performs a piano work called “Authentic Presence”. It’s a solo piano piece without digital delay or electronics, where Marshall created a sense of space, just using the acoustic instruments and where the reverb, or sustain, feels almost like a cathedral and where the harmonies are designed to blend as they extend.
Marshall’s "Fog Tropes" for brass sextet and ambient sounds on tape, closed the concert. This dark and evocative piece from Marshall’s time in the San Francisco Bay area, (used in the film, Shutter Island), was performed by brass players of the Metropolis Ensemble, conducted by Raquel Acevedo Klein. – Caryn Havlik
