There’s music from around the globe by Netherlands-based Ethiopian singer Minyeshu, British-Iraqi singer Alya Marquardt, guitarists from Niger and Ethiopia, and chamber gamelan pop.
Listen to the latest from the Netherlands-based, Ethiopian-born singer Minyeshu, and her record, Netsa – meaning ‘free’ in Amharic. Hear a song called “Ethio yo yo Pia”, which sets her voice over a blend of worldwide influences and traditional instruments - the masenqo, washint, kirar, and the captivating chechezeya. Then, listen to music from Desert Blues man Alhousseini Anivolla from Niger (of the band Etran Finatawa) and Girum Mezmur, the Ethio Jazz guitarist from Addis Abeba (and Musical Director for Mahmoud Ahmed), and their pan-African All-Star band from the album Afropentatonism.
There’s music by British-Iraqi singer and composer, Alya Marquardt, together with her New York-based ensemble Shamash, which fuses Iraqi folk music, contemporary jazz, beatboxing by Adam Matta, and Arabic maqam. Also, listen to music by oud player Gordon Grdina and his band, The Marrow, which combines jazz and Arabic music. Then, hear music from 3,14, a trio of musicians -Efren López, Ciro Montanari and Jordi Prats- playing sarod, tabla and rubab, who call up the legacy of the Silk Road by focusing on the silk worm itself, from their 2020 record, Bombyx Mori.
