Listen to music by composer Mario Diaz de Leon, who works in modern classical music, experimental electronic music, metal, and improvised music. His pieces might move between all of these, incorporating chamber music and technology, and sometimes leaning toward his heavy side (like that of his industrial black metal band Luminous Vault and doom-industrial-electronic Oneirogen). Hear his works “Sacrament”, a piece for flute, marimba, and electronics featuring members of the Talea Ensemble, along with “Luciform”, a concerto for flute and electronic music, featuring new music champion and flutist Claire Chase.
Then, hear work by New York clarinetist Jeremiah Cymerman, for Mario Diaz de Leon, from the 2021 record, Citadels & Sanctuaries, which contains pieces dedicated to a composer that has played a vital role in the clarinetist’s musical development. Cymerman’s output has been described by The Wire as “blown out studio creations that merge extended reed techniques with the crushing, airless sonics of black metal” (Bandcamp liner notes.)
