#4649, Violins, Plus...

New Sounds | Jul 28, 2024

Hear the violin in several different settings in work from Congregation of Drones (Pauline Kim Harris and Jesse Stiles), Brooklyn-based composer and visual artist Dana Lyn, Cuban-American multi-instrumentalist Bryan Senti, and more.

Listen to an electro-acoustic soundscape from Congregation of Drones, who are Pauline Kim Harris (violin) and Jesse Stiles (electronics). Hear one of the long-form pieces that was recorded live, and performed in-person at Carnegie Mellon University, in February of 2020, just before pandemic lockdowns began. Their album is called, Twenty-Twenty, as in “hindsight is twenty-twenty", and the titles of each piece are taken from the front page of the New York Times on the day on which the piece was recorded.

Then, listen to violin-centric music by L.A.-based Cuban-American multi-instrumentalist Bryan Senti, which perches between western classical music, systems music, and folkloric music of Colombia and Cuba. There’s also work by Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Dana Lyn, for chamber ensemble. Hear some of her nine-part suite that mirrors the creation story of Bay Area artist Jay DeFeo’s monumental painting The Rose.

Plus, listen to work by Puerto Rican composer/performer/educator Angélica Negrón, written for violinist Johnny Gandelsman, one of the founders of Brooklyn Rider. During the long months of the pandemic lockdown, he commissioned dozens of composers to write for violin and other sounds, and collected those works into a triple-album called, This is America. - Caryn Havlik
