Ma Mere L'Oye

Although "Ma Mere L'Oye," or the "Mother Goose" suite was directly inspired by Perrault, Ravel also drew from other sources — including Perrault's rival, the Comtesse d'Aulnoy. Originally written as a piano duet for the children of friends, "Mother Goose" was soon developed by Ravel into the colorful orchestral suite we hear tonight (which was, in turn, expanded into the popular ballet).
