Hear samples of new music by Polish cellist/composer Resina, Russian pianist Anton Batagov, and Swedish-Iranian sound artist Shida Shahabi. Plus, a memorial tribute to Stephen Sondheim.

Hear new versions of Stephen Sondheim songs as a memorial tribute, played by pianist Anthony De Mare from an in-studio session recorded for Soundcheck in 2013. They’re from De Mare’s Liaisons project, where composers have done their own reworkings of tunes from Sondheim’s musicals. Listen to works inspired by Stephen Sondheim’s songs from composer Nico Muhly, pianist Ethan Iverson, and minimalist Steve Reich.

Then, sample new music by Polish cellist and composer Resina with a side of heavy music. The ominous riffs and half-time breakdowns are from her 2021 record, Speechless. Also, listen to new music from Russian pianist Anton Batagov for an exhibition (in that great tradition)– specifically for The Manege exhibition center in Saint Petersburg. Also, hear some of a dance score by Rival Consoles, which takes on themes of the human and emotional consequences of life surrounded by data, and a film score by Swedish-Iranian sound artist Shida Shahabi.
