There’s new music from Polish duo of pianist-singer Hania Rani and cellist Dobrawa Czocher, Algerian Tuareg group Imarhan, and duduk-like music by Queens-based fretless guitarist Gabriel Akhmad Marin. Plus, work by London-based tuba player Theon Cross (Sons of Kemet), a portion of a film score from cellist Clarice Jensen, and more.
Recorded by them in their native Poland, Inner Symphonies is the first record of original works from the Polish duo of pianist-singer Hania Rani and cellist Dobrawa Czocher, reflecting their love of the natural world as well as themes of friendship and hope (DG album announcement.) Hear Rani and Czocher’s piece, “Spring.” Then, listen to fretless electric guitar generating the sound of the double reeded Armenian duduk, from Gabriel Akhmad Marin, drawing on melodies from the Southern Caucasus Mountains and along the Silk Road.
From London, there’s a new record by tuba player Theon Cross, which he calls “Afro Diaspora Music,” and is rather like the stylistically omnivorous music he plays in Sons of Kemet, where Cross embraces grime, reggae, dub, soca, hip-hop, and dancehall. Listen to a duet with tuba player Oren Marshall, who was the previous tuba player in Sons of Kemet. Then, hear more from BON, the London-based production, composition, writing, and art duo, this time working collaboratively with composer Lucinda Chua.
There’s also music from the Algerian five-piece "desert rock" or Tuareg band Imarhan. Then, listen to minimalist percussive sound art by Turkish-born, New York-based producer, composer and pianist Berk Icli. Plus, hear music by New York-based cellist / composer Clarice Jensen and her music for scenes from Mexican director Fernanda Valade's award-winning, full-length debut, Identifying Features, taking on the humanitarian crisis that engulfs Mexico’s border.
