#4518, Electroacoustic Music

New Sounds | Aug 6, 2023

Hear electroacoustic music with improvisation and a sense of place or just space-is-the-place by London's cosmic jazz trio The Comet Is Coming, Texas combo Olsen St. Clair, and NY sax player/composer Lea Bertucci.

From London, listen to music for after the end of the world from cosmic dance jazz party trio The Comet Is Coming, which features Shabaka Hutchings “King Shabaka” on sax, Max Hallett “Betamax” on drums, and Dan Leavers “Danalogue” on keys. Then, listen to music by Manchester-born bandleader, composer, saxophonist, activist and orator Alabaster DePlume, from a new collection of instrumental tunes, this one featuring ‘Danalogue’ from The Comet Is Coming. Plus, hear the electronically-treated music by the UK duo of musician-producers Nightports in collaboration with the improvised acoustic drums of Betamax, aka Max Hallett of The Comet Is Coming.

Also, hear music from Texas by composers Jeffrey Olson and Michael St. Clair, as Olsen St. Clair, inspired by spiritual jazz and the sweeping emptiness of expansive western landscapes. There’s more  sax and electronics from New Yorker Lea Bertucci which also explores themes of place and the American landscape, by bringing together field recordings and ambient soundscapes recorded in both New York City and in Omaha, Nebraska.

Listen to music inspired by shifting clouds of starlings at dusk by Kirsten Volness, which features improvisation, fixed media and live processing of piano, double-bass and percussion. There’s also music by T. Griffin for a art world documentary film called The Proposal, which combines guitars, horns, upright bass and acoustic percussion with electronics, sampling and ambient treatments. That, and more. – Caryn Havlik
