Kodály's Music of the Gypsies

Evening Music | May 6, 2010
Can anyone resist listening to “See the Gypsy eats [cottage] cheese”? It’s a short choral reworking by Zoltán Kodály of a traditional Romanian song, “Turot eszik a cigany.” (Hence, the translation!)

Kodály’s “Dances of Marroszek” follow, Ivan Fischer conducting the Budapest Festival Orchestra in this work based on themes from Transylvanian folk music played by peasants and gypsies, lovingly researched and recorded by Kodaly on phonographic cylinders between 1904 and 1912.

Pianist Lars Vogt is featured in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Sir Simon Rattle conducting the City of Birmingham Symphony; later, Ax, Stern, Laredo, and Ma play the Faure Piano Quartet No. 2.
