Hear music that blends the sounds of traditional music from Turkey and the Balkans, as well as traditional music of Ethiopia and Morocco with contemporary instruments and sounds in works by Amsterdam-based Turkish psych band Altin Gün, Romanian duo Balkan Taksim, and from Brussels-based Ethiojazz and psychfunk band Azmari. Plus, get lost in the groove in Gnawan trance-rooted music by UK-based outfit Electric Jalaba.
Listen to the traditional Turkish folk and Anatolian rock, all psyched and jazzed up by Amsterdam-based Altin Gün. They combine baglama/saz riffs, vocal melodies, fuzzy bass, wah-wah guitars and analogue organs and a retro sound world of vintage drum machines and 80’s synth pop. Then, sample Balkan-sounding music by New York trumpeter Ben Holmes who channels ancient sounds through the filter of 20+ years of study in jazz, klezmer, and classical music. There’s also music by Balkan Taksim, a duo from Romania who fuses instruments and folk songs of the Balkans with often psychedelic electronics. Listen to the Turkish and Ethiopian scales in the psych-funk Ethiojazz-influenced music of Brussels-based band Azmari.
