Larks Take Wing

Soprano Anne-Lise Berntsen and organist Nils Henrik Asheim, beloved for their earlier CD, "Engleskyts," return with five more free improvisational interpretations on Norwegian religious popular hymns. A second-hour treat.
Larks take wing in the first hour as the Mosaiques Quartet bring us Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Lark” Quartet in D, followed by Frederic Chiu’s presentation of the Franz Liszt transcription of “Hark, hark, the lark” by that master of song, Franz Schubert.
After the usual film-music segment, we feature Eric Ewazen’s Concerto for Violin and Strings, a work commissioned by the St. Lukes Chamber Ensemble of New York City and premiered with them and violinist Krista Feeney in 2000. This evening’s performance features Adele Anthony as the soloist, giving a “buoyant interpretation” (Ewazen’s words), along with the Sejong Soloists under their artistic director Kyo Kang.
