Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here
Evening Music | May 6, 2010
Did you know that the tune for “Hail, hail, the gang’s all here” was stolen outright from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance”? If only hearing is believing, stay tuned for proof!
Lou Harrison’s Suite for Violin and Strings is heard in a stirring performance by young violinist Maria Bachmann, with James Sedares conducting the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The Overture to “Rienzi,” the not-often-heard first of Richard Wagner’s grand opera tragedies, is played by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under its music director and conductor, Daniel Barenboim. These same forces can be heard live this Sunday evening, the 15th, playing more Wagner, as well as Boulez and Beethoven.
Gilbert and Sullivan (b. this date in 1842) wrote “The Pirate’s of Penzance for a U.S. premiere that just barely made it to the boards on the last day of the year 1879. It’s been a fave over here and across the pond ever since. We bring you some excerpts in a lively performance by the Welsh National Opera Orchestra and a goodly number of soloists under the enthusiastic baton of Sir Charles Mackerras.
