In The Mists

Biographer Jaroslav Vogel described cycle “In the Mists,” Leos Janácek’s four-movement piano cycle, as “one long struggle between resignation and newly-felt pain.” Leif Ove Andsnes distills that pain for us this evening.
Andsnes is enjoying the spotlight and sharing with others in a series of chamber performaces at Carnegie tonight, as well as on the 6th, 9th, and 13th.
Ernest Bloch’s “Schelomo” is often referred to as a Hebraic rhapsody for cello. It is certainly rhapsodic, and one of the most popular and most frequently programmed (both on the air and in the concert hall) of Bloch’s works. The incarnation we offer this evening is with Mischa Maisky on cello, Leonard Bernstein conducting the Israel Philharmonic. You can also hear the work performed live at Lincoln Center, when the New York Philharmonic plays it under guest conductor Leonard Slatkin on May 5 through 7, with Lynn Harrell as cello soloist.
Speaking of things Hebraic, how about a bit a klezmer? Paul Schoenfield’s “Klezmer Rondos” will get your feet tapping and your vocal chords humming along and maybe even a tear or two flowing as you enjoy baritone Douglas Webster and flutist Carol Wincenc, along with the Solisti New York under Alasdair Neale.
