Four Horns and Orchestra?
Evening Music | May 6, 2010
Four horns are featured in our first hour. How many times have you heard a work for four horns and orchestra? This evening is provides a golden opportunity for horn enthusiasts.
Robert Schumann’s Concertstuck in F, Opus 86, composed in the very productive year of 1849, requires all four hornists to be virtuosos. Schumann called the work “one of my best pieces,” and we offer one of the best performances—by the principals of the Chicago Symphony who do their own group and their conductor Claudio Abbado proud.
Randall Thompson was born this day in 1899 in New York City, but he was raised in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he received his first lessons in piano and composition. He furthered his musical studies at Harvard and in Rome, and soon made Aaron Copland’s 1926 list as one of “America’s Young Men of Promise.” His Symphony No. 3 is brought to us by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Schenck.
Dawn Upshaw performs Canteloube’s evocative “Chants d’Auvergne” with the Lyon Opera Orchestra under the direction of Kent Nagano. Check out her April 28th program at Carnegie Hall, where pianist Richard Goode joins her in an evening of outstanding music making.
