Celebrating the Vernal Equinox

Even thought the vernal equinox was some days ago, we’re celebrating the season this evening, starting with tenor Ian Bostridge singing Noel Coward’s “Something to Do with Spring.”
Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” follows, Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra. Conductor Charles Dutoit brings that venerable institution to New York on April 12th, joined by pianist Martha Argerich; they’ll perform Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto, as well as some Faure and a premiere of a work by MacMillan.
Harry Christophers brings The Sixteen to The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, where they’ll perform the three Ts, Tavener, Tallis, and Tippett. This evening, they sing Tallis’s “Gaude glorioso dei Mater.”
Violinist Laura Russell is featured in Augusta Read Thomas’s “Spirit Musings,” Edwin London conducting the Cleveland Chamber Symphony. Thomas says the work “has urgent, seductive, and compelling qualities of sometimes complex but always logical thought, allied to sensuous and engaging sonic profiles.” Hear more of her work at the Miller Theatre on Columbia University’s campus on April 7th.
