Summer Music

We could all us a bit of summer right now, couldn't we? Well, if we can't get it outdoors, we'll at least get a taste of it indoors with some "Summer Music."
Our evening begins with a bang as Hugh Wolff and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra intone the "Celebration Dance" from Aaron Copland's quintessential American ballet "Billy the Kid." We'll also have dancing of a different kind, with a Pavane and Three Galliardes from Renaissance composer Thoinot Arbeau (courtesy of Jeremy Barlow and the Broadside Band). Settling things down a bit is Emmanuel Chabrier's "Suite Pastoral" with the Vienna Philharmonic under John Eliot Gardiner. By the way, if you like what you hear, you can enjoy more of it in person: the American Symphony Orchestra performs Chabrier's masterpiece comic opera "The King Beside Himself" on February 13th at Avery Fisher Hall.
Continuing in our relaxed mode, we'll hear a lovely performance of Beethoven's "Serenade" Trio for Strings from "dream team" Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zuckerman, and cellist Lynn Harrell (who celebrates his 61rst birthday today), followed up by a Beethoven song, "Der Liebende" (The Loving), with Swedish Baritone Olaf Bar. Then it's the perfect time to dream of warm weather with Samuel Barber's "Summer Music," brought to us by the brilliant Prairie Winds ensemble.
Ah well, it couldn't last forever. Shaking things up again in our final hour is the Cello Octet Conjunto Iberico with Villa-Lobos' lively "Bachianas Brasileiras," featuring soprano Claron McFadden; pianist Pierre Huybregts keeps the mood going with some Spanish "Songs and Dances" from Federico Mompou. Finally, we'll end the evening with a touch of class from Finlandia: Jukka-Pekka Saraste conducts the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 7 in C.
