Fairies are Dancing Everywhere!

Magic and enchantment are in the air, and fairies are dancing everywhere! Hear Purcell’s incidental music to “The Fairy Queen” and Graham Fitkin’s “Hard Fairy.”



Evening Music begins with two serenades: the Adagio from Mozart’s Serenade in G and Sibelius’s Serenade for Violin and Orchestra. Then we enter the realm of enchantment. First, Purcell’s “The Fairy Queen,” incidental music for John Dryden’s adaptation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Jeanne Lamon leading her band, Tafelmusk; then Graham Fitkin’s “Hard Fairy,” an enigmatically-named delightful riff featuring John Harle’s soprano sax and two pianos.

DanceAfrica, the annual celebration of African and African-American music, dance, and culture can be heard at BAM on Memorial Day weekend. But we’ll take you to that continent this evening, as we present a movement from Andrew York’s “African Suite” played by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and Dumisani Maraire’s “Kutambarara” (Spreading), the Kronos Quartet performing along with various soloists. Copland’s familiar “Quiet City” features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet.
