#4430, Vintage Music for Analog Synths
Hear a generous portion of an album-length piece by American composer and sound artist Alvin Curran, who’s also a co-founder of the pioneering Musica Elettronica Viva improv ensemble. This electroacoustic work, “Songs and views from the Magnetic Garden,” was specifically written for live performance, and combines chanting, singing, the bells of Rome, the lapping of the ocean, and many other sounds.
Also, listen to music by minimalist pioneer Terry Riley from an album where he draws on his intimate studies of Indian classical music. Listen to his “Songs for the Ten Voices of the Two Prophets” with original lyrics sung in Indian raga style to the accompaniment of two looped Prophet 5 synthesizers Recorded music for Two Prophet 5 synths and voice in Indian raga style.
There’s also music by electronic music pioneer Laurie Spiegel, who worked with Buchla and Electronic Music Laboratories, as well as Bell Labs. From a collection of her early works, called the Expanding Universe, listen to “The Unquestioned Answer” – a reference to the early 20th century work, “The Unanswered Question,” by American composer (and insurance salesman), Charles Ives. Laurie Spiegel later became known for having developed an algorithmic composition software called Music Mouse, an “intelligent instrument” that both improvised and composed. - Caryn Havlik
