#4416, New Music for Saxes
Hear music featuring the saxophone - some inspired by West African rhythms and Ethiojazz - by World Saxophone Quartet, London-based Nubya Garcia, Jesse Wilms, and Norwich trio Mammal Hands.
Hear new music by London sax player and bandleader Nubya Garcia from the record, Source. Garcia is also a member of the all-female group Nerija and the Maisha collective, in addition to countless collaborations and guest spots. Listen to her tune “Stand With Each Other” which features the London Afrobeat band Kokoroko’s front-line of Cassie Kinoshi, Sheila Maurice-Grey, and Richie Seivwright (as per this Bandcamp interview.) Hear another of her tracks which draws on Colombian cumbia rhythms, featuring Bogotá percussion-and-vocal group La Perla. Plus, listen to music from Swedish jazz drummer/composer Bengt Berger inspired by Ghanaian funeral drumming.
Also, listen to music from American composer Jeremy Wilms, based on a piece of traditional West African melody, and expanded for Wilms’ large band. Then, from Norwich jazz-ish sax-piano-drums trio of Mammal Hands, listen to a tune, "Rhizome," which may take some inspiration from the late Ethiopian sax player Gétachèw Mekurya. There’s also West African Snap," by the World Saxophone Quartet, jazzers who frequently dip into blues, funk, and R&B.
