#4410, Good Vibes (and Other Mallet Percussion)
Hear some good vibes, and by that, we mean vibraphone, and music based around other mallet percussion, with music by Australian band Tangents, Lond-based Vula Viel, and Ethiojazz legend Mulatu Astatke.
From the Sydney, Australia-based instrumental group Tangents, listen to new music with mallet instruments (and drums, piano, guitar, cello, and electronics) rooted in furious improvisation, and refined with precision production. Also, hear music by Russian synth futurist and sound sculptor Kate Shilonosova, aka Kate NV, and her wooden percussion-driven whimsical soundscape, “OAK.”
Hear Ghanian traditional music-informed music from London-based Vula Viel, a percussion-heavy band which features the starring instrument, the Gyil (the Dagaare xylophone made of sacred lliga wood), played by Bex Burch, the group’s founder. Then, there’s more music from the marimba family in a piece from balafon player Lansiné Kouyaté (of the Kela griots in Mali) and French producer/ keyboardist Jean-Philippe Rykiel.
Also, Spanish-born German-based composer, Alejandro Coello’s piece “9th Street Espresso,” inspired by New York’s nervous beat, which also features guest beatings from the group, Art Government Percussions. Then, hear music from Italy with guitar, sax, and mallet percussion from the Valentina Fortunati Trio, as well as music from Boston-based Julian Loida. Plus, music by the great Ethiopian bandleader and vibraphone player Mulatu Astatke, who is a living legend, and considered as the “father of Ethio-jazz.” (The Economist) - Caryn Havlik
