#4395, July New Releases

New Sounds | Jul 31, 2020

It’s the most wonderful time of a month – time for new releases. There's new music from Bang on a Can Co-Founder Michael Gordon as played by Vicky Chow, and atmospheric guitar from Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg, all released during this pandemic time.

Also, hear the world premiere of music by New York composer David Cieri for carillon, for his World Carillon Project. This work, “United” is from the belfry of the University of Chicago, the 2nd largest Carillon in North America, featuring Carillon Guild President Joey Brink performing the piece:

Then, listen to instrumental music by London-based musician Kamaal Williams, whose music defies classification. From his record, Wu Hen, hea “Street Dreams” which combines trip-hop, and the orbit of spiritual jazz, along with strings by guest artist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Also, hear ‘Cinematic Afrobeat’ from bass player Michael Olatuja with a tune, “Ma Foya,” featuring harpist Brandee Younger.

Listen to a few of the short pieces by composer and Bang on a Can Co-Founder Michael Gordon wrote, simply “July.” There are 31 of them, one for each day of July, and they were written specifically for pianist Vicky Chow, who has been releasing them on her Instagram account, @vcpianos each day. There’s also music from harpist Lauren Scott, and her recent record, Beyond the Horizon – New Music for Lever Harp. Plus, ambient guitar from Jonathan Meiburg, released as Shearwater, and music by Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman. Bartlett’s album, Shelter, consists entirely of piano nocturnes, all named after roses and written as a love letter to his partner, British actress and singer Ella Hunt.
