Listen to new music for guitar by Kaki King, Gyan Riley, Noveller, and the California Guitar Trio, with processed and altered guitar, modified guitar, and classical and electric guitars.
Hear pieces by guitarist and instrument-builder Kaki King. In her piece, “Teek,” she has modified guitar by adding a bridge and playing it on her lap, so that it almost resembles a toy koto or a zither in its sound capabilities. “Teek” comes from the 2020 album, Modern Yesterdays. Also, listen to music from her multimedia project, The Neck is a Bridge to the Body, where her custom-made instrument also serves as a projection screen.
Then, listen to layers of electric guitar, classical guitar, banjo, and ukulele from guitarist and composer Gyan Riley and a record made while sheltering in place. Also, hear music from the late Michael Hedges’ and his extended tape piece for guitar, “Spare Change” as well as a piece for harp guitar.
There’s new music from the California Guitar Trio (Paul Richards, Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya), who formed in 1991, and recorded a record during the past year while touring. Listen to original compositions by each of the members, who contributed a movement each to “The Gaudela Trilogy,” a work dedicated to and commissioned by Gouveia Art Rock Festival and Gouveia City Council in Portugal. Plus, hear music by Noveller, aka Sarah Lipstate, and her brand-new electric guitar instrumentals from her record, Arrow, which hint at tranquility and beauty, yet temper these with darkness. - Caryn Havlik
