#4339: New Sounds Live 2020– Kelly Moran and Missy Mazzoli, Part 1
Today's episode features part of the New Sounds Live concert that took place on February 29, 2020 as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival's 10th Anniversary season at Merkin Hall.
Hear collaborative works for piano: four hands and prepared piano by inventive Grammy-nominated composer and keyboardist Missy Mazzoli and pianist, composer, engineer, and producer, Kelly Moran (Warp Records).
There are also world premieres Moran’s Don’t Trust Mirrors for two pianos, one prepared. Mazzoli will also perform her own works solo and with violinist Olivia De Prato, and Moran will perform some solo songs from her recent expansive album Ultraviolet as well as new material.
Missy Mazzoli is currently part of the composition faculty at the Mannes College of Music, composer-in-residence at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and is working on an opera commission set to premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in late 2020. She also leads her own band, Victoire, and founded Luna Composition Lab, a mentorship program and support network for female-identifying composers ages 13-19.
Kelly Moran is a keyboardist, composer, engineer, producer, and an artist who works with prepared piano. She can conjure via her keyboards and electronics everything from jazz to dream pop, black metal, ambient music and minimalism. Moran is sponsored by Yamaha, was awarded a 2018 Van Lier fellowship by Roulette Intermedium, and has collaborated and/or toured with Oneohtrix Point Never, percussion quartet Yarn/Wire, as well as no-wave, avant-rock, and experimental ensembles. She has also composed a major work for long-term John Cage collaborator Margaret Leng-Tan and records for Warp Records.
