Hear contemporary and secular prayers by New York composers Kitty Brazelton, Missy Mazzoli, Son Lux, and electric violist Martha Mooke. Plus, music by Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld.
Listen to music by New York-based composer, professor, singer, improviser, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Kitty Brazelton and her modern oratorio with texts from the Book of Ecclesiastes. The work combines bowed strings and electronics with extracts and variations on just the vowels of the texts.
There’s also music by composer, keyboardist and bandleader, Missy Mazzoli, and her work, Vespers for a New Dark Age, a suite for singers, chamber ensemble and electronics. The work is built around text, both spiritual and worldly, by contemporary poet Matthew Zapruder and was commissioned by Carnegie Hall. This recording features members of Roomful of Teeth - sopranos Martha Cluver, Melissa Hughes and alto Virginia Warnken Kelse - along with Mazzoli's ensemble Victoire and drummer Glenn Kotche. Also, listen to a work for solo violin by Mazzoli, which builds on material from Vespers for a Dark Age using sampled keyboards, organs, voices, and strings to create a distortion and delay soundscape of pre-recorded accompaniment.
Then, hear “Mended Vespers” from the collaborative record by Son Lux (aka Ryan Lott) and the top-notch New York-based chamber ensemble yMusic, called First. Plus, listen to music from sax player Colin Stetson and his pyrotechnics, and the violin acrobatics of Sarah Neufeld. Also, sample some electric viola music by Martha Mooke, a “Future Prayer” from her record, No Ordinary Window.
