Hear new music from the global duo Farafi, German cellist and composer Anne Müller, New York's Anbessa Orchestra, and works with flow by neo-soul jazzers Mae.Sun and Chicago-based bassist Junius Paul. Plus, music from a film score by Fatima Al Qadiri and music that came about after writing music for film by Donna McKevitt.
Farafi is the duo of Darlini Singh Kaul & Joy Tyson who met in the state of Goa on the West coast of India. Hear some of their music, which is based around percussion and vocals -Joy plays the cajon, Moroccan krakebs and frame drum, Darlini the West African ngoni, the kashaka and Indian ghungroos - but includes all kinds of sounds inspired by traditional African, Middle Eastern, Indian and Western contemporary music.
Hear more music that ignores stylistic boundaries from MAE.SUN and Chicago-based bassist Junius Paul. MAE.SUN is a band formed by saxophonist, vocalist and composer, Hailey Niswanger and features sax, flute, synths, vibraphone, and more, with maybe a foot in the spiritual jazz camp, embracing the flow state of Zen. Then, hear new music by bass player Junius Paul, who is both a member of the long-standing Art Ensemble of Chicago and works with drummer Makaya McCraven's organic beat combo. It’s from his debut, Ism, on International Anthem.
Listen to new music from German cellist and composer Anne Muller, from her debut recording, Heliopause, named after the boundary where the sun's wind ceases to have influence - ultimately, the border of our solar system. Hear music by electronic music producer Fatima Al Qadiri, who was born in Senegal, raised in Kuwait, and is now based in New York and Berlin, from a film score to Atlantics, a film out of Senegal that is both a ghost story and a love story. Also, hear new music from composer Donna McKevitt, which came about after writing the score for a new film - called A Song Still Inside.
There's music by the New York-based 7-piece band Anbessa Orchestra, who look to the golden age of Ethiopian pop – the late 1960’s and ‘70s in Addis Abbaba- with loping grooves, buoyant brass lines, moody organ, crisp guitars, and solid percussion. Listen to their latest track, “Tch'elema (Darkness),” which despite acknowledging “the dark time of right now ,“ uses the Ethiopian Antchi Hoye scale, usually meant for joyous occasions, and looks to a brighter future.
Plus, new music from cousins Ballaké Sissoko with his kora, and Baba Sissoko with his percussion, ngoni and voice. The two stringed instruments meet in a tune called “Angata.” - Caryn Havlik
