#4281: With Martin Kohlstedt

German pianist and composer Martin Kolstedt presents music from his record, STRÖME, made in collaboration with Leipzig‘s Gewandhaus Chorus and performs improvisational modules in-studio as well.

Kohlstedt was trained in jazz piano and produced electronic dance music. He also scores films and has a hand in producing audio books and theatre plays. On the piano, he feels his way intuitively into the wood, felt hammers and steel strings, opening himself up with every key strike. His past work is a unity of contrasts – of day and night, patience and impulses, of tension and meditative release.

His latest, Ströme, was commissioned by the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig for artist Martin Kohlstedt and the Gewandhaus Chor, and sees the composer collaborating with the choir and its director, Gregor Meyer, to work with recombinant parts of connected musical ideas. It is music that encourages a listener to go deep within the layers of yourself and start a conversation. Kohlstedt presents some of these new modular pieces from the record, and performs some of the modules on the Steinway piano in-studio. – Caryn Havlik
