#4280: Laments and Sad Songs

New Sounds | Sep 26, 2019

Hear an hour of sad songs with laments from Armenia and Ireland, Greece, Mali, and the U.S.A. from M. Lamar, Marisa Anderson, Savina Yannatou, and Donnacha Dennehy’s “The Hunger.”

There’s music from the male soprano and composer M. Lamar which casts the African American spiritual tradition in a metal goth veil. It’s M. Lamar’s “Oh, Graveyard,” a lament framed by electronic textures composed by Liturgy frontman Hunter Hunt-Hendrix and one that is aptly described by its album title Funeral Doom Spiritual. Also, hear vocal music from Armenia, as well as an original lament in Greek, from singer Savina Yannatou, “With the Moon I'm Walking.”

Listen to keening, the Irish form of lament known– both modern and medieval in music from Donnacha Dennehy, and the late French composer Hector Zazou. Hear a portion of Dennehy's opera, The Hunger, based on a firsthand account of the Irish famine of 1845–52, featuring vocalists Katherine Manley and Iarla O' Lionáird with Alarm Will Sound. Plus, listen to laments from the late French composer and record producer Hector Zazou from an album of Irish sacred and ancestral songs. And more.  - Caryn Havlik
