#4277: Western Music Built on Field Recordings
Hear Western music built on field recordings from elsewhere - Java, Ethiopia, Australia and Jamaica - that might share a sense of ritual. Listen to trancey, hypnotic music from Patti Smith and Soundwalk Collective with a recording of a Sufi group from Ethiopia, along with work from Madison, WI-based composer and author, Gregory Taylor. There’s also music made from field recordings collected in Australia and Jamaica.
Listen to field recordings of gamelan music of Indonesia – that of the chiming metallic percussion orchestra of the courts of Java - processed, chopped, and arranged in a work by Gregory Taylor. The work is from a double album, Retinue, where the pieces on the record had their beginnings in Taylor’s book on creating step sequencers using Max/MSP written for Cycling '74.
There’s also music fashioned from Sufi chants and prayers of the Sufi Group of Sheikh Ibrahim recorded by the Soundwalk Collective in the holy city of Harar, in Ethiopia. Over the top of these hypnotic chants, are the sounds of Patti Smith reading “Eternity” by Arthur Rimbaud. The whole thing is then driven by a pulsing electronic rhythm that “recalls both 1970s krautrock bands like Tangerine Dream and the hypnotic percussion of North African trance rituals.” (-John Schaefer)
