Listen to music from a collaborative song cycle based on extant lyrics in music from the record, When We Are Inhuman, from composer and guitarist Bryce Dessner, together with Will Oldham, aka Bonnie Prince Billy, and the Chicago-based new music band, eighth blackbird. Hear new arrangements of Oldham’s songs, with his “Beast for Thee” featuring vocals by flutist/composer Natalie Joachim. Also, listen to Bryce Dessner’s arrangement of “Banks of Red Roses.”
Then, listen to music by Christopher Cerrone and his song cycle entirely based on short poems by a single writer, the California Bay Area’s Kay Ryan - The Pieces That Fall To Earth. Set for high soprano and ensemble, the American new music band Wild Up is featured on the recording.
Finally, listen to a a song cycle that WNYC commissioned of Richard Einhorn – Carnival of Miracles, a work in six parts, each dealing with a specific kind of freedom (religious, scientific, artistic, etc.) Written for the group Anonymous 4, Hear part 4, about freedom of speech, and part 5, a combination of texts by Victoria Woodhull, a 19th-century feminist, and excerpts from writings of the Marquis de Sade.
