#4253, Small Acoustic Ensembles

New Sounds | Jun 5, 2020

Listen to duos, trios, and a quartet from West Africa, South Africa, and East Africa, along with music by a father and son duo from the flamenco tradition. Plus, hear music from an Argentinian trio and Turkish music from an international quintet.

Listen to a few combinations of bowed string and plucked string duos featuring kora and cello, guitar-adapting-kora and cello, and guitar with cello. Hear music by South African guitarist Derek Gripper and American cellist Mike Block from their recent record, Saturday Morning in Boston. They've done up traditional thumb piano music from Zimbabwe arranged for cello and guitar, along with Gripper’s jaw-dropping arrangements of 21-stringed kora music for the 6 strings of a guitar. Also, hear Spanish flamenco guitarist Pedro Soler, and his cellist son, Gaspar Claus from their 2016 record Al Viento, which was recorded in both Iceland with Valgeir Sigurösson and completed in Spain. Plus, listen to the elegance of French cellist Vincent Segal and Malian kora player Ballake Sissoko from their stunning record, Chamber Music.

Then, hear the guitar, shakers, voices, and a pair of boots in the Rwanda-based band, The Good Ones. There’s also music featuring a Fanta bottle as percussion and two guitarists in the style known as “Kenya dry”. Also, hear music by Argentine bandoneon player and composer Dino Saluzzi, along with guitar accompaniment by his son, and bass in chamber music from Cite de la Musique. Plus, listen to  Turkish music from an international quintet of musicians led by nyckelharpa virtuoso Marco Ambrosini and the - Ensemble Supersonus, which uses harpsichord, jaw harp, harp, kannel (an Estonian plucked string instrument), and nyckelharpa (Swedish keyed fiddle.) - Caryn Havlik
