#4252: Pattern-Based Music
Hear music derived from patterns in data from electrical monitoring of plant leaves, music for a game of go, plus music by Julia Wolfe, Joseph C. Phillips Jr., and music by Flow State.
Listen to some pattern-based music by composer Joseph C. Phillips Jr. written for his 20-piece chamber orchestra/big band, Numinous - which includes many of the top new music players from New York City. It’s a work called “Unlimited,” one of the six parts in the hour-long autobiographical work, “Changing Same” and is a blend of jazz improvisation and groove-based minimalism or other forms of composed music, something he calls “Mixed Music”.
Then, listen to music for chamber band by Australian composer Chris Perren for his septet, Nonsemble, from his large 30-minute work “Go Seigen vs. Fujisawa Kuranosuke.” It’s based on the surrounding patterns from a 1950’s championship game of go, which is an ancient Chinese strategy game of great complexity, where one must surround and capture a greater territory on a playing board than one’s opponent.
There’s also pattern-based music by Japanese post-minimal composer Mamoru Fujieda from his collection of works inspired by Baroque music but based on patterns of plants, which took 15 years to create. Fujieda took the data from a botanist friend’s device which monitors the micro-changes of surface-electric potential on leaves of plants and transformed these patterns into melodic material. The music calls for alternative tuning systems combined with traditional Japanese instruments like koto and Western instruments from the Baroque period like viola da gamba and harpsichord. Listen to one of these “Patterns of Plants” from the collection.
Hear music based on patterns by composer/guitarist Ben Brody and the band Flow State, along with music by composer/guitarist Patrick Grant and Tilted Axes.
