Hear the combination of spoken word with music, featuring work by London-based rapper and poet Kate Tempest, Scottish folk singer James Yorkston, and the combination of poet Will Burns and composer Hannah Peel.
Kate Tempest is an English spoken word performer, poet, recording artist, novelist and playwright. In 2013, her epic narrative poem “Brand New Ancients” won the Ted Hughes and won a Herald Angel at the Edinburgh Fringe. Listen to a portion of that award-winning epic, “Brand New Puritans” as well as “Holy Elixir” from her latest album, The Book Of Traps And Lessons. Kate Tempest’s visceral writing demands foreground listening with its physicality of emotions, spoken-sung, as “the stump speech, the poem, the magic spell, the rap verse, the protest chant” (with thanks to NPR Music’s First Listen description of her delivery.) Be prepared to feel things.
Also, listen to poetry by Will Burns and the soundworld of composer Hannah Peel in collaboration with producer Erland Cooper from the record, Chalk Hill Blue. It’s a combination of the pastoral along with Peel’s colliery brass and modular synths that emerges as a “site-specific-non-specific record of creative place portraiture.” (Caught by the River)
Hear Scottish folk singer-songwriter James Yorkston’s thoughtful and conversational ambient spoken word experiments, including “Guy Fawkes' Signature”, which ends with a crackling fire.
